Water main installation, repair and new connections

A water main is the asset everything downstream depends on. We install, repair and renew mains for developers, contractors and utilities across Hertfordshire, London, the South East and the East of England — to water industry standards, tested and certified before anyone signs it off.

The service

Mains work is judged on what happens after you leave.

A supply pipe serves one property. A main serves a street, a site or a development — so the cost of getting it wrong is measured in the number of people without water, not in one unhappy customer. That changes how the work has to be done: shored excavations, correct bedding and surround, hydrostatic testing before backfill, chlorination and sampling before commissioning, and as-built records that survive the handover.

Cascade is LRQA WIRS-accredited to undertake eligible self-lay and contestable works within our accredited scope, and is accredited for mains and service connections up to and above 355mm — from a single domestic service to large-diameter distribution mains. We install new distribution mains on development and infrastructure sites, respond to bursts around the clock, and replace ageing, undersized or repeatedly failing mains where patching has stopped being economic.

Where a connection can be made without taking the network down, it is: under-pressure drilling taps a live main so the existing supply is never interrupted.

What we do

Three jobs that look similar and are not.

A burst at midnight, a new main on a development programme and a planned renewal in a live street are three different disciplines. The plant is ours, the operatives are ours, and so is the traffic management.

New mains and site-wide distribution

Distribution mains for development and infrastructure sites, from the connection at the existing network through to the last plot. Routes are designed around what is already underground, laid in blue PE to water industry specification, then tested, chlorinated and sampled before a drop of water reaches a tap.

  • Route design coordinated with existing buried services
  • Blue PE mains installed to water industry specification
  • Valves, hydrants and chambers set to adoptable standards
  • Pressure testing, chlorination, sampling and certification

Burst response and repair

A burst main is a clock, not a job sheet. We attend, isolate, excavate and repair — then reinstate properly rather than leaving a patch for someone else. Where the surrounding pipework is sound the repair is localised; where the burst is the third in two years, we will say so rather than book the same visit again next winter.

  • 24/7 attendance for bursts and major leakage
  • Isolation, repair and recommissioning
  • Traffic management and highway works where the main runs under road
  • Honest advice on repair versus planned renewal

New connections and live tapping

New mains and service connections up to and above 355mm, designed, applied for and installed. Where the network cannot be shut down — a live street, a hospital, a working industrial site — under-pressure drilling taps the main while it stays in service, so nobody downstream loses supply for the sake of one new connection.

  • Accredited mains and service connections, 355mm and above
  • Under-pressure drilling and live main tapping
  • Connection applications prepared and managed with the water company
  • Meter and valve chamber installation

Why Cascade

Accredited to work on the network, not just near it.

Work on adoptable water infrastructure is gated by accreditation. These are the schemes that let us onto the network and through main contractor pre-qualification.

  1. 01

    LRQA WIRS accredited

The Water Industry Registration Scheme is independently assessed. We are WIRS-accredited to undertake eligible self-lay and contestable works within our accredited scope.

  2. 02

    Thirty years of mains experience

Over three decades working on water infrastructure across Hertfordshire, London and the surrounding counties — domestic streets, commercial sites and live development schemes.

  3. 03

Accredited up to and above 355mm

Accredited for mains and service connections up to and above 355mm, which covers everything from a single dwelling through to large-diameter distribution mains.

  4. 04

    One contractor, not three

Plant, operatives, traffic management and reinstatement are all ours. There is no handover to a groundworks subcontractor halfway through and no separate trade to chase for the surface afterwards.

  5. 05

Pre-qualified for utility and contractor frameworks

SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe, Acclaim, Constructionline Gold and Achilles UVDB Silver Plus. Pre-qualification is paperwork we have already done.

  6. 06

    Round-the-clock for what cannot wait

Bursts, major leakage and sudden loss of supply are answered 24 hours a day on the freephone line, not queued until the next working morning.

Technical detail

What a main has to satisfy.

Mains work is governed by material specification, depth, testing and hygiene. These are the standards the installation is measured against before it can be commissioned or adopted.

Material
Blue PE100
Polyethylene to BS EN 12201, blue for below-ground potable water. Electrofusion and butt-fusion joints make a continuous pipe with no mechanical joint to fail, and PE tolerates ground movement that would crack older cast iron.
Depth of cover
750–900mm
Typical practice is 750mm of cover in footway or verge and 900mm under carriageway, deeper where the highway authority or the water company requires it. Cover protects the main from frost and from surface loading.
Accredited mains & services
355mm and above
Cascade is accredited for mains and service connections up to and above 355mm, so the full range — a single domestic service through to large-diameter distribution mains — sits within our own accreditation.
Pressure testing
Hydrostatic, pre-commissioning
The main is filled, allowed to stabilise and held under test pressure to prove joint integrity before it is backfilled and again before it is commissioned. A test that fails is a cheap problem; a joint that fails after adoption is not.
Disinfection
Chlorinate, flush, sample
New mains are chlorinated, flushed and bacteriologically sampled before being brought into supply, following the water industry’s hygiene principles. Operatives working on potable systems hold hygiene cards.
Live connection
Under-pressure drilling
A tapping tee and valve are fitted to the main under pressure and the main is drilled through the valve, so a new connection is made without shutting off anybody downstream.
  • Separation from other services

A potable main must be kept clear of drainage and of other buried utilities, with the separations set out in the street works guidance. Where a crossing is unavoidable it is designed and protected rather than improvised in the trench.

  • Bedding and surround matter as much as the pipe

Most premature PE failures trace back to what was put around the pipe, not the pipe itself. Correct bedding material, careful compaction and no sharp fill are what stop point loads becoming leaks in five years’ time.

  • Adoption needs records, not just pipework

A main that will be adopted has to arrive with as-built drawings, test results and sampling certificates. We produce them as the work proceeds rather than reconstructing them afterwards.

  • Old mains are rarely where the drawing says

Records for older networks are frequently wrong about depth, route or material. We trace and prove the line before excavating rather than trusting a plan drawn before anyone on site was born.

Benefits

What accredited mains work buys you.

  • 01

An asset that can be adopted

Built, tested and documented to the standard the incumbent water company requires, so adoption is a process rather than an argument.

  • 02

    Supply that stays on

Live tapping and phased isolation mean new connections and alterations happen without taking existing users off supply for a day.

  • 03

    Programme you can plan around

Mains, connections, testing and reinstatement delivered by one contractor, so the sequence is ours to manage rather than three trades to coordinate.

  • 04

    Bursts dealt with, not deferred

A 24/7 response limits the water lost, the damage done and the time a street or a site spends without supply.

  • 05

    Fewer repeat visits

Correct bedding, proper jointing and a pressure test before backfill are what stop the same trench being reopened next year.

  • 06

    Reinstatement finished properly

Carriageway, footway and verge put back to specification, with the highway authority’s requirements met rather than left for you to resolve.

Common questions

Before you enquire.

The questions we are asked most often about this service, answered without the sales gloss.

See all FAQs
What is the difference between a water main and a supply pipe?

A water main is the shared pipe in the street or across a site that carries water to multiple properties, and it is normally the water company’s asset once adopted. A supply pipe is the private pipe running from the public–private boundary into one building, and it is the responsibility of the property it supplies. Different ownership, different rules, and very different work — which is why they are separate services.

Can you make a new connection without shutting off the water?

Usually, yes. Under-pressure drilling fits a tapping tee and valve to the live main and drills through the valve, so the main stays in service throughout and nobody downstream loses supply. It is the normal approach on live streets, hospitals, schools and working industrial sites where a shutdown is disruptive or unacceptable.

How quickly can you attend a burst main?

We operate a 24/7 response for bursts, major leakage and sudden loss of supply. Attendance time depends on location and what is already running, so call the freephone line and we will tell you honestly when we can be there rather than giving you a number that sounds good.

Do you handle the water company application as well as the installation?

Yes. As an accredited Self-Lay Provider we prepare and manage new connection, self-lay and NAV applications, liaise with the incumbent water company through design approval and adoption, and hand over the asset with as-built records and test certification.

How deep does a water main have to be laid?

Typical practice is 750mm of cover in footway or verge and 900mm under carriageway, with deeper cover where the highway authority or the water company specifies it. The depth protects the main from frost and from traffic loading, and it is set at design stage rather than decided in the trench.

Should an old main be repaired or replaced?

A single burst on an otherwise sound main is a repair. A main that has failed repeatedly, is undersized for current demand, or is old cast iron in poor condition is usually better renewed — each repair on a deteriorating main tends to stress the next weakest point. We will tell you which case you are in based on what we find, not on which job is larger.

Which areas do you cover for water mains work?

Hertfordshire is our operational heartland, alongside London, Bedfordshire, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Buckinghamshire. If your scheme sits outside that, ask — we will tell you straight away whether we can service it properly.
